How to use acrylic powder? A practical guide

How to use acrylic powder? Acrylic powder is a versatile material widely used in nail art, allowing for the creation of durable and aesthetically pleasing nail enhancements. However, it’s essential to be familiar with the proper techniques and steps to achieve the best results. In this article, we’ll discuss how to use acrylic powder effectively.

Beautiful nails at home — materials needed

  1. Acrylic Powder: Choose a high-quality acrylic powder in your desired color.
  2. Monomer/Liquid: This is the acrylic liquid that, when combined with the powder, creates the acrylic paste.
  3. Acrylic Brush: Invest in a good-quality acrylic brush with a pointed tip for precision.
  4. Dappen Dish: A small container to hold the acrylic liquid during the application process.
  5. Nail Tips or Nail Forms: Depending on whether you’re doing extensions or overlays.
  6. Nail Primer: Helps in better adhesion of acrylic to the natural nail.

Everything you need to know

1. Prepare the natural nails

  • Start by cleaning and shaping the natural nails. Push back the cuticles and remove them.
  • Buff the surface of the nails lightly to create a better grip for the acrylic.

2. Select the nail tips or fail forms

3. Apply nail primer

  • Apply a thin layer of nail primer to each nail. This enhances adhesion and helps prevent lifting.

4. Fit nail tips or apply nail forms

  • If you’re using nail tips, select the appropriate size for each nail and secure them with nail glue. If using forms, attach them securely under the free edge of the natural nail.

5. Mix acrylic powder and liquid

  • Pour a small amount of acrylic liquid into the dappen dish.
  • Dip the acrylic brush into the liquid, allowing the bristles to absorb a small amount.
  • Wipe off excess liquid on the dish’s edge and dip the brush into the acrylic powder. The powder should form a small, bead-like ball on the brush.

6. Form the acrylic bead:

  • Place the acrylic bead onto the nail near the cuticle area. Use the brush to flatten and shape the acrylic, working it towards the free edge.
  • Continue adding more beads if needed, ensuring a smooth and even application.

7. Shape and sculpt:

  • Once the acrylic is applied, you have some time to shape and refine the extension using the brush before it fully sets. Create the desired nail shape and thickness.

8. Allow to dry:

  • Let the acrylic dry and harden completely. This usually takes a few minutes.

9. File and buff

  • After the acrylic has cured, use a nail file to shape the nails further and refine the edges. Buff the nails to smooth out any imperfections.

10. Finish with top coat

  • Apply a top coat to seal and protect the acrylic nails. This also adds a glossy finish.

Nail tips for acrylic nails

  • Work quickly but precisely, as acrylic dries relatively fast.
  • Clean your brush regularly during the application process to prevent clumping.
  • Practice proper ventilation, as acrylic monomer fumes can be strong.
